Edathanal farm

I am Resmi Edathanal residing in Marangattupally Panchayat in Kottayam district. I was born and brought up in a village called Irumbakachola in Palakkad district. My upbringing revolved around my family’s agricultural practices, which nurtured my interest in farming. This passion led me to pursue both agriculture and animal husbandry.

During my school days, I sourced seeds from the Mannuthy Agricultural University and cultivated my own fresh vegetables. Later, after getting married and moving to Kottayam, I received my husband’s support and encouragement, which enabled me to explore and achieve much in agriculture. Farming, to me, is not just a livelihood but a way of life that brings safety, energy, and joy to both the mind and body.

I chose organic farming to restore the organic content lost in the soil due to chemical fertilizers and to provide safe food. To kickstart my journey in organic farming, I purchased a native breed cow. Today, my farm has grown significantly and is home to 48 native cows belonging to 26 different breeds. My farm is now widely known in Kerala as Edathanal Farm.
My farm also has around 62 crossbreeds. I am a farmer who actively promotes organic farming and works to preserve biodiversity.

Additionally, I am a mixed farmer engaged in diverse activities, including crop cultivation, livestock farming, and organic methods. At my farm, I rear cows, goats, poultry, ornamental birds, and fish, while also cultivating organic vegetables and producing value-added products.

With the permission of the Kerala government, I had the opportunity to travel to advanced nations like Israel to learn modern agricultural techniques. My journey in the agricultural sector also enabled me to participate in prestigious programs such as the G20 W20 Program and the International Dairy Federation Program organized by the Government of India.
Providing safe and healthy food for myself and the community is something I consider a major accomplishment. My efforts in the agricultural sector have been recognized with numerous awards and honors.

In 2021, I received the National Gopal Ratna Award from the Government of India for my contributions to the animal husbandry sector. In 2019, I was honored with the Organic Farmer Award by the Kerala government’s Organic Farming Board. In 2024, I received the State Award for Best Organic Farmer from the Kerala government and was also honored with the Millionaire Farmer of India National Award by the Government of India in the same year.

Beyond farming, I am committed to social responsibility. I provide free organic produce to underprivileged cancer and kidney patients. Every day, I distribute buttermilk or other dairy products to nearly 1,000 children for free. Additionally, I offer financial support to children and patients in need, ensuring that my work contributes not just to agriculture but also to the well-being of society.
